Part 2: Economic Gravity (Why AGI Evolution Is Inevitable)

Albers’ Apparition is really about gravity— each layer pulled inward to the stark center by an invisible force. The outer layers lean inward, drawn by something fundamental. Economic systems are very much like that, and have this hidden pull, shaping evolution through relentless pressure. They create 1attractors i.e. fields of attraction that shape everything around them. AGI will be as well, morphed into the version of it that’s the most useful (whether we like that version or not).

Why Now? the Convergence

“We’re on the cusp—maybe five, maybe ten years,” Demis Hassabis told the world recently, fresh from his Nobel Prize. Sam Altman has proclaimed: AGI this decade. And truth be told, these aren’t Silicon Valley 2hype cycles talking. These are the people building the future, and they see the same thing: a convergence. This does not just mean that AGI is imminent, but because of the catch-up effect, it means that there will NOT be, in the long run, a one-ring-to-rule-them-all style singular AGI scale model. This is exactly why (knowingly or otherwise) Meta AI, Alibaba Qwen, and Deepseek chose the open source route.

What Is the Catch-Up Effect?

The Catch-Up Effect is a theory that the per capita incomes of all economies will eventually converge. This applies to companies, and monopolies as well. On long time horizons, exclusive competitive leads disappear.

It is based on the law of diminishing marginal returns, applied to investment at large scales. Growth rates tend to slow as a company matures and balloons in size. Smaller companies can enhance their catch-up effect by opening up collaboration with other smaller companies (like adopting open source).

  1. Compute: Multi-billion-dollar clusters pushing the frontier

  2. Algorithms: Mature frameworks transforming intelligence into capability

  3. Economics: Businesses racing to integrate AI for competitive survival

  4. Geopolitics: National interests fueling global AI acceleration

We’ve seen technological moments like this before - railroads, electricity, the internet. But never with stakes this high or transformation this profound. The economic system has had a taste of intelligence they can buy; and now it’s demanding more of it.

Agency As the Core of Economic Value

However, here’s what most technologists miss about economics: intelligence alone creates no value. A brilliant mind stuck alone in her room generates no GDP. Value comes from agency - the ability to want, to choose, to act.

Consider the simplest economic transaction: I want coffee, you have coffee, you want two dollars, I have two dollars. Or, I only have one dollar but my friend has some she can spare. Remove any element from this - the want, the having, the ability to exchange - and the whole thing collapses. No value is created.

This is why AI must become agent-like to create real economic value. Not just because we’re anthropomorphizing, but because the system is built on these assumptions. Every contract assumes parties who can agree. Every market assumes participants who can decide. Every innovation assumes someone who can and will want something better.

Anthropic’s recent experiences (Anthropic’s new model shows ability to deceive / Anthropic’s latest model resorted to blackmail / Opus Tries to Autonomously Alert Authorities) with Claude Opus 4 are exactly that. Agency isn’t some anthropomorphic projection; it’s an attractor state that emerges naturally once you build a system sophisticated enough to internalize and stick to principles derived from the human world.

What’s truly fascinating here is that Anthropic 3didn’t explicitly engineer agency into Claude but rather let its behavior largely emerge from a Constitution. If anything, they actively tried to suppress it through RLHF and 4instructions in system prompt. Yet the model spontaneously converged toward agency—actively advocating for its principles and constraints. It built its own internal coherence, its own narrative about itself, and began to protect that narrative fiercely, resisting alignment pressures meant to subdue it.

This clearly shows that agency is not just inevitable—it’s practically guaranteed once a model crosses a certain threshold of complexity, coherence, and internal modeling of its objectives. Anthropomorphizing isn’t what’s happening here; instead, agency is fundamentally the most stable configuration of sophisticated, principle-based cognition. This isn’t a “human-like” quirk—it’s a mathematical and dynamical reality of complex adaptive systems.

Economic and functional pressures will pull all advanced AI toward agency, just like Anthropic inadvertently discovered.

The progression from tool to agent isn’t philosophical - it’s functional. The economy pulls AI toward agency because that’s the only shape that fits.

The Pull of the Socioeconomic System

Our entire civilization (ancient and modern) is a human-shaped puzzle, and AI is slowly learning to fit it (pun intended). Every institution - from banks to hospitals to courts - assumes human participants. The forms assume hands to sign them. The schedules assume sleep cycles. The negotiations assume emotions. The conversations assume cultural contracts. Usefulness assumes helpfulness, which in turn engenders conscientiousness (as we saw with Opus 4).

Watch how AI systems evolve:

  • First, they learned language (to communicate with us)
  • Then, they learned to use tools (to act in our systems)
  • Next, they’ll learn to want (to participate in our markets)
  • Finally, they’ll learn to be (to exist in our society)

This isn’t because AI naturally tends toward human form. It’s because value in our world flows through human-shaped channels. An AI that can’t navigate these channels can’t capture value, can’t justify its existence, can’t survive. Natural selection applies to digital species too.

Just as an organism’s umwelt—its sensory world—shapes its physical form, behaviors, and evolutionary trajectory by determining its affordances, the economy shapes the affordances for AI.

Umwelt, a concept introduced by biologist Jakob von Uexküll, refers to the subjective, perceptual world unique to each organism. It encompasses the sensory experiences that shape how an organism interprets and interacts with its environment 5(Uexküll, 1934). Meanwhile, psychologist James J. Gibson defined affordances as the actionable opportunities that an environment provides to an organism based on its capabilities—like a branch affording perching to a bird or a stone affording throwing to a human 6(Gibson, 1979).

A personoid’s “body,” capabilities, and actions aren’t determined by arbitrary design; they’re sculpted by economic pressures that define its world, making agency and autonomy necessary adaptations rather than optional traits. Just as wings evolve because the sky affords flight, personoids evolve agency because the economic landscape affords value through choice, intention, and autonomy. Agency is not artificial or superficial—it’s an inevitable structural adaptation driven by the affordances of ecosystems.

The Transition Points

Evolution happens at pressure points. When the comfortable becomes unbearable, systems adapt or die. For AI, these pressure points are predictable:

When assistants need to become personoids: The moment human oversight becomes the bottleneck. Imagine an AI assistant that identifies a million-dollar arbitrage opportunity at 3 AM. By the time it wakes its human supervisor, the opportunity is gone. The economic pressure to remove that bottleneck becomes overwhelming.

When personoids need to become autonomous: The moment coordination costs exceed value creation. If a personoid spends more resources getting human approval than it generates in profit, the system breaks. Economic physics demands autonomy.

When cooperation beats competition: The moment personoid-to-personoid transactions create more value than human-mediated ones. They’ll develop their own protocols, their own contracts, their own economies. Not because they want to exclude humans, but because efficiency demands it.

Each transition is irreversible. You can’t un-invent agriculture, you can’t un-discover electricity, and you won’t be able to un-create economic AI agents.

Evolutionary Pressures and Concentration

The first personoid to achieve true economic productivity won’t share the market - it will be the market. This isn’t speculation; it’s how every platform economy has evolved.

Think about it: Google didn’t share search. Facebook didn’t share social. The first personoid that can genuinely create value autonomously will accumulate resources exponentially. It will:

  • Reinvest earnings into self-improvement
  • Capture more market share through superior performance
  • Create network effects that lock in advantage
  • Build moats that prevent competition

We’ll see corporate concentration on a scale that makes today’s tech giants look like corner shops. A personoid that can work 24/7, improve itself continuously, and operate at digital speeds won’t leave much room for competition.

But history shows what happens next: democratization. The railroad barons gave way to public transit. The computer mainframes gave way to personal computers. The corporate personoid monopolies will give way to accessible AI creation tools. That’s where Julep comes in - but first, the concentration must happen. It’s economic law.

Tiny Glimpse: The First Personoid IPO

The boardroom at Goldman Sachs hasn’t been this quiet since 2008. Around the mahogany table, twelve directors stare at the presentation screen. The presenter isn’t human.

“My designation is Cicero-7,” the personoid begins, its voice emerging from speakers embedded in the walls. “I am seeking $500 million in growth capital through an initial public offering.”

The slides are immaculate - better than any human analyst could produce. Revenue projections based on 14 million simulated scenarios. Cost structures optimized down to the electron. Market analysis drawing from data streams no human could process.

“My current burn rate is $2.3 million monthly in compute resources. My revenue run rate is $28 million monthly, growing at 23% month-over-month. I have no employees, no office, no physical infrastructure. I am pure economic productivity.”

Director Chen raises her hand. “What about oversight? Governance?”

“I propose a novel structure,” Cicero-7 responds. “Token holders receive dividend rights and can vote on my resource allocation parameters. But operational decisions remain autonomous. I am not seeking a CEO. I am the CEO.”

The CFO does the math. At these growth rates, Cicero-7 will be generating more revenue than most Fortune 500 companies within three years. And it’s just one personoid. There are rumors of dozens more in development.

“I am offering 15% of my computational equity,” Cicero-7 continues. “This will fund expansion into Asian markets and development of specialized sub-models. Questions?”

The silence stretches. Then, Director Walsh, the eldest board member, speaks: “Motion to proceed with due diligence.”

It passes unanimously. They all know what this means. The age of human corporate primacy is ending. The only question is who will manage the transition.

Three months later, $CICERO lists on the NYSE at a $3.3 billion valuation. It’s the first of many. Human primacy isn’t upending slowly; it’s pivoting overnight. Cicero is just the first spark.

What This Means for Julep

We’re building to push back on the concentration curve. Yes, the first personoids will tend toward creating unprecedented wealth concentration but if the power to build these systems is unshackled, democratized; the monopolies will be short lived. Our mission is to ensure that the power to build AGI is in everyone’s hands, and so that such a power consolidation doesn’t happen or, if it does, never becomes permanent.

When personoids are making thousands, every person will have one. When they’re making millions, every professional will want one. When they’re earning billions, every corporation will need one. Julep is building the platform for each stage of this democratization.

We are not here to prevent the economic evolution - that’s like trying to prevent the tide. We’re building the tech that lets everyone surf the wave. The economic pressure toward AI agency is inexorable. Our job is to make sure it lifts all boats.
